01 / THE CHALLENGE

The challenge

Space, time and operational information intersect in many different visual forms. What design knowledge can be drawn together to support future interfaces?

02 / MY CONTRIBUTION

My contribution

I produced a first-author survey of geospatial-temporal visualisations for military operations, followed by an extended Springer publication. Related research examined the lack of specialised subsea symbology and visual interaction design guidance.

03 / DESIGN PROCESS

Design process

The work synthesised visualisation literature as part of a broader PhD programme on subsea visual interaction design. The portfolio diagram groups space, time and interaction as an explanatory lens; it is not a reproduction of the published taxonomy.

04 / IMPLEMENTATION

Implementation

The interactive overview uses a small SVG matrix to communicate relationships between design dimensions. The underlying research is documented in the linked publications; the site diagram is an editorial illustration.

05 / OUTCOMES & LIMITATIONS

Outcomes & limitations

The original survey appeared at IVAPP 2023, pages 115–129. An extended version appeared in Communications in Computer and Information Science 2103, pages 374–396, in 2024. A related VisGap paper at EuroVis 2023 addresses subsea symbology.
